Ham and Turkey and Cheese in Puff Pastry

In addition to macarons, I also made slow roasted tomato soup and this puff pastry recipe for our New Year's celebration. It was kind of a soup and sandwich combination even though we never got to the soup that night. I recently saw this on Ina's show and the ease of it is what made this so appealing. Simple delicious flavors in one cute little appetizer. I decided to do half of this with ham and half with honey roasted and smoked turkey breast. We saved these for the second half of the party and I can say, I am glad I had a couple bites of this at home before I went out. Within minutes of me taking these out of the warmer, they disappeared. I loved the tang from the Dijon with the melted cheese. I preferred the turkey side, especially since the turkey was kind of sweet, but the ham was really good too and I am not normally a ham kinda gal. Are you having a good weekend? I feel like I am finally recovered from the New Year's festivities, but hopefully this cold that is threatening will be kept away with some Emergen C. Happy Friday!

Ham and Turkey and Cheese in Puff Pastry
(From Ina Garten)

1 package (2 sheets) frozen puff pastry, defrosted
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1/4 pound black forest ham, sliced
1/2 pound Swiss Gruyere cheese, sliced
1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water, for egg wash

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Place a piece of parchment paper on a sheet pan.

Lay 1 sheet of puff pastry on a floured board and carefully roll it out to 10 by 12 inches. Place it on a sheet pan and brush the center with the mustard, leaving a 1-inch border around the edge. Place a layer first of ham and then cheese, also leaving a 1-inch border. Brush the border with the egg wash.

Place the second sheet of puff pastry on the floured board and roll it out to 10 by 12inches. Place the second sheet on top of the filled pastry, lining up the edges. Cut the edges straight with a small, sharp knife and press together lightly. Brush the top with egg wash and cut a few slits in the top to allow steam to escape.

Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until puffed and golden brown. Allow to cool for a few minutes and serve hot or warm.

Those look so delicious! I'd be snatching them up, too. Warm, flaky and cheesy, who could resist!

I don't think it gets much better than ham + cheese + pastry! Sometimes simple flavors really are the best!

Hope you keep that nasty cold from ruining your weekend! Get some rest tonight!

I think I am losing the battle between me and the cold. I was supposed to go dancing tonight and instead I am staying in with George Clooney and "Michael Clayton".

Ooooh, this is a cool way to upscale ham and cheese! I bet the turkey side did taste great, and I like how you described the tang of the mustard and cheese. YUM! Hope you feel better soon.
